CONSTRUYENDO EL CENTRO EDUCATIVO DE SAN BENITO LACHAUA - version en Inglés

The Centro de Promoción Comunitaria Betania (CEPROCOBE), through its program EDUCBETANIA, aims to build a 180-square-meter educational center. The school is intended to facilitate in the academic preparations (basic, diversified and university level of education) of the inhabitants of the remote village of San Benito, Lachua and nearby villages located 125 kms. from the city of Cobán, Alta Verapaz. Looking at the socio-economic situation of Guatemala, the villages are located too far from the department's capital city. The needs and preparations in the educational centers in the villages - which are supposed to offer opportunities to children, youth and adults to continue their studies - are barely met and addressed.

San Benito is a place, geographically, located in the center of many villages. This project intends to benefit approximately 22 communities of the Department of Alta Verapaz and some parts of the municipality of Ixcán, Playa Grande. Therefore it has been taken into account that this educational center will not be exclusively for the village of San Benito, Lachua, but will also serve all students who need good educational preparation, no matter where they come from nor their race (ethnicity) nor their religion. What is to be taken into consideration is the individual’s lack of resources and, above all, his/her desire to study and be successful in life.

This Project is a response to the educational needs that are seen and identified in the village of San Benito, considering that it only has one primary school. There are no appropriate venues and facilities that provide children, youth and adults the opportunity for learning – thus, their studies are cut short. Moreover, those who wish to continue their studies will have to leave their village, only to encounter greater obstacles such as the language as well as the lack of lodging, readiness, accompaniment and guidance - factors that determine and influence their decision to whether or not proceed to basic, diversified and university studies.
